About

What is BreakTimer.com?

BreakTimer.com is a free online work and study break timer based on the Pomodoro Technique — a proven productivity method that alternates focused work or study sessions with short rest breaks. By working in structured intervals, you protect your concentration, reduce mental fatigue, and accomplish more throughout the day without burning out.

How it works

The Timer Cycle

  • Work / Study session — Focus deeply for your set duration (default 25 min). Silence distractions and commit to a single task.
  • Short break — Rest briefly (default 5 min). Stretch, hydrate, or simply look away from your screen.
  • Long break — After completing your set number of short breaks (default 3), reward yourself with a longer rest (default 15 min).
  • Repeat — Each full cycle resets and begins again automatically if auto-start is enabled.
How to use

Getting Started

  • Press the play button to start your first work or study session.
  • Open ⚙ Settings (top right) to customize durations, color theme, sounds, and auto-start behaviour.
  • Use the skip forward button to move to the next phase early, or skip back to restart the current timer.
  • Switch modes manually at any time using the Work / Short Break / Long Break tabs.
  • Enable browser notifications in Settings so you're alerted even when the tab is in the background.
  • Your session stats accumulate throughout the day. Hit Reset Stats in Settings to start fresh.
Tips

Getting the Most Out of It

  • During work or study sessions, close unrelated tabs and put your phone face-down.
  • Use short breaks to move your body — even a 1-minute walk helps reset focus.
  • If 25 minutes feels too long or short, adjust the work duration to match your natural flow.
  • Enable Auto-start break so you don't have to remember to take breaks.
  • The long break is most effective when used for a real mental reset — step outside if you can.
  • Aim for 4–6 completed sessions in a working or study day for sustained, high-quality output.
